PhD Scholarships, Department of Geography & Sustainable Development, University of St Andrews, UK (2016)

The Department of Geography and Sustainable Development at the University of St Andrews invites applications for ESRC PhD studentships as part of its membership of the Scottish Graduate School of Social Sciences (SGSSS). The studentships take the form of +3 awards (PhD funding for students who have already completed appropriate masters level social science research training) and 1+3 awards (funding for students to study a Masters programme followed by a PhD). The studentships are offered in all areas of research within the interests of staff in geography and sustainable development, to start in September 2016. Areas of research include:

Join a thriving and internationally renowned research centre: DGSD is part of the School of Geography and Geosciences and has a thriving postgraduate community, with over 40 research postgraduates at various stages in their research. A further 25+ postgraduates take taught Masters courses annually.

We have an excellent research environment, with several major research centres attached to the Department. In the most recent evaluation of our research quality (REF 2014) we were delighted to be ranked 5th in the UK of 74 units assessed by the Geography, Environmental Studies and Archaeology panel. We were ranked 1st in the UK for the excellence of our impact case studies and our impact strategy. In terms of research environment we were pleased to be judged the 3rd best in the UK, with 87.5 per cent of our environment graded as world-leading, reflecting among other features the strength and diversity of our national and international research collaborations. The Department is very well equipped for a whole range of research in physical and human sciences. All doctoral students belong to a relevant research group and are encouraged to attend regular seminars, participate in the Department’s annual Postgraduate Research Conference, and present their work at national and international conferences.
