The Institute of Geosciences of the University of São Paulo is offering three post-doctoral fellowship positions, funded by the São Paulo Research Foundation -- FAPESP and linked to the Thematic Project, entitled "The Rio de la Plata Cráton and the Western Gondwana Assembly" (FAPESP grant number 2015/03737-0). Professor Miguel Ângelo Stipp Basei is the project coordinator.
The Project aims at unravel the geochronologic and tectonic evolution of the Rio de la Plata Craton and its marginal belts in the context of Western Gondwana Assembly. The project started in 2017 with two major scientific goals: 1) the upgrade of isotopic and geochronological techniques at the Geochronological Research Center of the IGc-USP, applied to the geologic and tectonic aspects of the project; 2) the multidisciplinary studies on key lithostratigraphic units and tectonic features in the Rio de la Plata Craton and the African counterpart.
The candidate should be mostly involved in the development of one of the research Projects (as described below), as well as on scientific dissemination and the teaching of tectonics and/or geochronology for graduate students. The selected fellows are expected to be able to conduct an empiric research including design data collection strategies, as well as to delineate research questions in close association with the development of Thematic Project, with publication of the results in national and international journals in the area of Geosciences.
• Postdoctoral 1: "Kinematics and age of the Major Shear Zones of the southeastern portion of Brazil and Uruguay. Comparison with equivalents lineaments of southwestern Africa"
The person involved will work directly in the kynematic characterization and tectonic modeling of large Shear Zones that compartmentalize the Pre-Cambrian domains of the Brazilian and Uruguaian eastern portion (Mantiqueira province) and the equivalent South African lineaments. The subproject in which the student will be linked is related to the development of the eastern border of the Rio de la Plata Craton (subproject 3.1.5). Structural, kinematic and thermo-chronological studies of the major lineaments occurring in the Ribeira and Dom Feliciano belts will be the major target of this project.
Supervisor: Prof. Dr. Mario da Costa Campos Neto
• Postdoctoral 2: "Upgrade of U-Pb and Hf methodologies on LAICPMS laboratory - establishment of new in situ analyses"
The fellowship will work directly on the improvement of the U-Pb and Hf methods in zircon, monazite and titanite to upgrade these systematics in the LA-ICP-MS laboratory, among other isotopic techniques. Post-doctoral student to address this issue should have extensive experience in handling LAICPMS to be able to meet the expectations that this activity requires.
Supervisor: Prof. Dr. Wilson Teixeira
• Postdoctoral 3: "Provenance studies of the sedimentary cover of the Rio de la Plata and Paranapanema cratons through the U-Pb analysis of detrital zircon of the Paraná Basin units"
The zircon provenance study of the sedimentary units that cover the Rio de la Plata and Paranapanema cratons, represented by the Paraná Basin units, will be the central theme of the third Postdoctoral project foreseen in this ThematicPproject. For this, detrital zircons of surface and sub-surface samples (the latter to be obtained from Petrobras drill holes) will be analyzed. In addition to sample collection, the predicted analyses involving pontual geochronological U-Pb determinations and Hf studies in zircon in the same crystals will be complemented by paleocrorrent studies and characterization of heavy minerals assemblages.
