Aalto University School of Science (Helsinki, Finland) invites applications for Post-doctoral positions in computational and theoretical physics
In a combined theoretical and experimental project, post-doctoral positions are available on the modelling side to predict and characterize the chemical and electronic properties of self-assembled molecular systems. The ultimate aim of the project is to construct materials with engineered electronic properties, particularly novel quantum materials based on two-dimensional metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and magnetic/superconducting transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) hybrids. We anticipate that initial steps will be focused on combining density functional-based techniques with phenomenological theory modelling and topological methods, while linking this to state-of-the-art Scanning Probe Microscopy measurements. Later developments are likely to include the application of machine learning methods to MOF/TMD electronic structure characterization and prediction.
The project is based in the Surfaces and Interfaces at the Nanoscale (SIN) computational group (aalto.fi/physics-sin) led by Prof. Adam Foster and the Atomic Scale Physics (STM) experimental group (physics.aalto.fi/stm) led by Prof. Peter Liljeroth, bothwithin the Department of Applied physics at Aalto University. It is partially supported by Prof. Liljeroth’s ERC Advanced Grant “Artificial designer materials”. We also anticipate strong links with the condensed matter theory group of Prof. Teemu Ojanen at Tampere University of Technology and the materials informatics activities of Prof. Patrick Rinke at Aalto University.
TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS AND DETAILS
Successful candidates shall have or are close to having a PhD in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, or related disciplines. Experience of computational physics simulations and scientific programming are required, and some experience in the topological band theory and/or density functional methods would be a benefit. The candidate must have a high motivation for research, show evidence of good written and oral communication skills in English, and enjoy working in an international and cross-disciplinary team. The standard contract periods are 2 years for post-doctoral researchers, with possibilities for extension (the project lasts for 4 years). Typical gross salary ranges at the Aalto School of Science are 3400-3800 €/month for post-doctoral researchers. Moreover, Finland has a comprehensive social security system.
