Traineeships at the European Central Bank 's Directorate General Economics

You will be part of the ECB’s Directorate General Economics. Our activities cover the euro area as a whole, as well as the individual euro area countries and the non-euro area EU countries. Our output includes articles and studies in ECB publications such as the Economic Bulletin, the Annual Report, the Occasional Paper Series and the Working Paper Series.

European Central Bank is seeking recent graduates – or students who are close to completing their studies – for our 2020 traineeship programme. Trainees will be assigned to one of the following three divisions within the Directorate General according to the candidate’s preference and business needs.

The Business Cycle Analysis Division analyses and forecasts real macroeconomic developments in the euro area and its largest countries. This includes business cycle monitoring, the development and use of forecasting tools, and the analysis of the main domestic demand components as well as prospects, risks and uncertainties. The Division also assesses the euro area institutional sector accounts and prepares external communications on business cycle developments.

The Fiscal Policies Division monitors and assesses the fiscal policies of EU Member States, provides fiscal forecasts for individual euro area countries and assesses the euro area’s fiscal stance. The Division also assesses the sustainability of public finances in the euro area and carries out analytical work on the macroeconomic effects of fiscal policy, the interaction between fiscal policy, monetary policy and the financial sector, and issues related to fiscal surveillance and EMU deepening.

The Prices and Costs Division analyses and forecasts inflation and its determinants in the euro area as a whole, as well as its individual countries and economic sectors. It assesses inflationary pressures from the external environment as well as from inflation expectations, wage and profit developments, and evaluates the associated prospects, risks and uncertainties. It provides input into internal decision-making processes and external communications on inflation.

Your Role
As a trainee you will perform one or more of the following tasks (the activities may differ across divisions):

contribute to enhancing analytical, econometric and forecasting tools;
retrieve data from public and commercial databases;
process, consolidate and transform datasets, and maintain and develop databases, in order to monitor nominal and real economic developments, fiscal developments and/or financial market indicators, possibly including the use of micro and intraday data;
conduct empirical analyses using databases, Microsoft Excel and econometrics software;
contribute to the ECB’s Economic Bulletin and other regular internal and published products of the Directorate General Economics, for instance by preparing tables and charts for reports or for PowerPoint presentations, in collaboration with other business areas within the ECB.
