On 7 November 2016, young European "white hat hackers" will meet in Düsseldorf to measure their skills in attacking and defending computer systems. A white hat hacker is a computer security specialist who breaks into protected systems and networks to test and asses their security. White hat hackers use their skills to improve security by exposing vulnerabilities before malicious hackers (known as black hat hackers) can detect and exploit them.
At the Düsseldorf event, the 2nd European Cyber Security Challenge (ECSC), participants will try to discover vulnerabilities in web applications, binaries and document files, solve crypto puzzles and hack hardware systems. The goal of the competition, which is organised by the EU Agency for Network and Information (ENISA), is to bring new people into the professional IT security field.
Therefore participation is restricted to young people who have not yet completed university or equivalent level education in the field and who do not work in it professionally. The event will also include a conference and teambuilding exercises where connections between contestants and the industry are made and paths for a future career are forged. While registration to ECSC 2016 is now closed, countries and organisers interested in competing in 2017 are invited to contact ENISA.
