The rethink:EU - EU Conference will take place from 08 to 10 June 2018 at the main building of Witten/Herdecke University, Alfred-Herrhausen-Straße 50, 58448 Witten, Germany.
The EU 2017: Increasing exports in Germany, stagnating youth-unemployment in Spain. Decreasing willingness to solve tasks on a European level.
The EU in future: United in diversity – or just diverse?
Focus: more justice, more Europe?
Pioneering EU decisions mostly move along the edge of national autonomy and inner-European solidarity. Where does this edge proceed in the case of company taxation, EU decision making processes or the division of the EU budget? Those are all justice-related questions, for which the answers depend on an European perspective.
Together with renowned experts and other European universities, we seek to find profound answers to those questions embedded in superordinate European challenges. The participants of the conference will examine various scopes of the European Union from the perspective of justice. However, there cannot be a debate about justice without heterogeneous participation: we invite up to 200 Europeans to the Ruhr-Area, to mutually create a vision of a more just Europe.
Brussels may have a problem – in Witten, dedicated Europeans may create some solutions.
Goal: joint action
Despite decades of existence, the European Union lacks one general public. This conference attempts to reach on a small scale what lacks on the large one: instead of talking individually of the EU, we want to discuss about the EU together. This is why we invite participants from all European countries. The perspectives and experiences of the European participants shall be used, exchanged and translated into action. It might be a starting point for a longer process: making the European Union more just and more attractive for all.
