Media Accessibility is the research area dealing with the "theories, practices, services, technologies and instruments that provide access to media products, services, and environments for people that cannot, or cannot properly, access that content in its original form" (Greco 2016). Media Accessibility is at the core of the most pressing priorities of the European Commission, such as the European Disability Strategy 2010-2020 and the Digital Single Market Strategy. For a long time, policies involving Media Accessibility have been concerned with quantity, e.g. setting quotas for inducing the widespread adoption of media access solutions, such as hours per year of subtitled TV programmes. Now that quotas are being met in many EU countries, attention is shifting over to quality.
Investigating the issue of quality in media accessibility is the focus of the MSCA Individual Fellowship project “Understanding Media Accessibility Quality” (UMAQ - H2020 MSCA 752659 - 2017-2019) carried out by Gian Maria Greco at the TransMedia Catalonia research group of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (Spain).
The conference represents a major step toward the emergent paradigm of Accessibility Studies and is a key action of the UMAQ project and will gather together, for the first time, key actors involved in research on quality in MA and its implementation in industry and policy, in order to provide a deeper understanding of the issues involved, and boost a coordinated research programme at the international level.
More than fourty speakers from four continents will address the problem of quality in connection to a broad range of issues, such as: audio description, subtitles, sign language on TV, visual perception, machine translation, data and information quality approaches, object oriented broadcasting, subtitles in augmented reality environments, and use of electrophysiological measures for testing quality.
The conference will also feature a roundtable led by David Wood (International Communication Union - United Nations, and European Broadcasting Union).
