The goal of the first project is to develop a fundamental understanding of the relationship between materials, design and battery properties for new concepts of lithium-ion batteries. The project includes electrochemical characterization and modelling of the battery performance. The projects cover solid-state battery concepts. Modelling and characterization of battery performance with respect to ageing and safety will also be a topic.
An attractive alternative to costly and energy-consuming recycling of batteries is the reuse of the cells in a less demanding application, for instance in the electric grid to balance electricity production from renewable sources. However, ageing of lithium-ion batteries is associated to gas evolution, and the second project aims to further develop in situ gas measurement with mass spectrometry in order to evaluate aged batteries.
