Four post-doctoral Fellowships are available to work at the Federal University of São Carlos (UFSCar), in the Chemistry Department (CD), in the city of São Carlos, São Paulo State, Brazil. The candidates will carry out research on the interaction between plants, insects and microorganisms to better understand the communication between them and to generate strategies for insect and phytopathogen control, under supervision of Prof. Maria Fátima das Graças Fernandes da Silva and Prof. Antonio Gilberto Ferreira, and co-supervision of Dr. Tiago Venâncio and Dr. Rose Maria Carlos. The research is linked to the Thematic Project “The Biorational Control of Pest-Insect and Phytopathogens” (Grant number 2014/50918-7), coordinated by Professor Maria Fátima das Graças Fernandes da Silva and funded by the Sao Paulo Research Foundation -- FAPESP.
The post-doctoral fellows will work in the following activities:
Cultivars that are resistant to many fungal and bacterial pathogens or insects could play an important role in the search for new pesticides. These plants have compounds that can act as a good barrier for colonies from bacteria and fungi, and for insects. Therefore, the search for novel methodologies to determine which compounds are associated with these resistances will be developed (3 Post-doctoral Fellowships; each scholarship will involve different microorganisms and/or insects).
Furthermore, if it is assumed that it is possible to modify the chemical structure of compounds to improve activity and selectivity, our future results could help direct the rational design of derivatives as potent and effective bactericide, fungicide and insecticide agents for plant diseases. Therefore, novel methodologies to synthesise more potent bactericide, fungicide and insecticide will be developed (1 Post-doctoral Fellowships).
