The University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and Department of Neurology, has opportunities immediately available for a PhD student and a Postdoctoral Associate.
The principal investigators are Dr. Antoni Barrientos, Ph.D., Professor of Neurology and Biochemistry & Molecular Biology and Dr. Flavia Fontanesi, Ph.D., AssistantProfessor of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology.
Our groups are interested in the study mitochondrial biogenesis and function in health and disease using several model organisms (e.g., human cell lines, as well as the yeast Saccharomycescerevisiae). We investigate diverse molecular processes ranging from regulation of mitochondrial translation and the assembly process of mitochondrial ribosomes, to mitochondrial RNA metabolism and to the biogenetic pathways of respiratory chain complexes and supercomplexes. Our goal is to decipher the pathways and elements involved in these processes and their regulation by environmental cues.
The positions require high motivation towards research, strong background in general Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, and fluency in English.
Minimum qualifications include:
- For the Ph.D. student position: BS in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology or related field. A master’s degree will be considered as a plus.
- For the Postdoctoral Associate position: a Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology or related field. Experience on human iPSC models will be considered as a plus.
Previous experience working in the mitochondrial field is a plus. The capacity for independent work and, at the same time, the ability to work as a member of a team are essential. Any appropriate combination of education, certifications, and/or relevant work experience will be considered.
