2 PhDs with focus on IT & Automotive
The main challenges for high performance engines are the extremely high thermal and mechanical loads on engine components (all engine categories) as well as narrow operating ranges and combustion anomalies (gas and dual fuel engines) that limit dynamic behaviour and emission behaviour. Thus, component design as well as the design and control of the combustion process are becoming the key issues for the ultra-high-performance engines of the future. A team of PhD students will jointly work on the overarching goal to increase our understanding of stochastic phenomena and working towards a more realistic simulation of highly complex processes.
Part of the PhD related work will be the development of tools to better capture and comprehend the complex combustion phenomena, followed by research on techniques to integrate expert knowledge via visual analytics and active learning. This will include an exploratory data analysis phase in close cooperation with your peers. A complementary part will be the development of hybrid models for analysis and simulation. These will combine physical models for the combustion process with state-of-the-art machine learning approaches, including deep learning.
Expected main scientific contributions:
Apply state-of-the-art techniques from visual analytics, active learning and data science for complex stochastic combustion phenomena (e.g., knocking)
Rigorous analysis and development of hybrid (data-driven and physical) modelling approaches for analysis and combustion simulation
