Research and graduate education at the department of chemistry and molecular biology comprises a wide scientific field from the atomic and molecular levels all the way through cells to intact organisms. Much of the phenomena studied here impact on our natural environment and living systems. We participate in undergraduate programs in chemistry, molecular biology, medicinal chemistry, biology, marine sciences, and pharmacy.
The PhD student positions are linked to the research activities conducted in Henrik Sundén's research group, where a general focus is on the development of new catalytic methods for the creation of chemical bonds. More specifically, we focus on using organic small molecules, carbenes, as catalysts to create complex molecules from simple starting materials. We have also shown that carbenes in combination with oxygen, in the form of air, can be used to replace otherwise resource-intensive reagents commonly used in oxidation reactions. The PhD positions will thus include method development within the field of carbene catalysis for the creation of carbon-carbon bonds and the development of new oxidation reactions.
