Traineeships at Economics, Market Analysis and Banking of European Stability Mechanism

European Stability Mechanism is looking for candidates studying towards (or recent graduates from) a Masters’ degree, PhD, or postdoctoral programme to assist our Economic, Market Analysis and Banking (EMB) department. The aim of the traineeships is to provide promising young professionals an opportunity to understand how the European Stability Mechanism (ESM) works and contribute to its mission, while also pursuing their research interests.

The ESM is the permanent crisis resolution mechanism for the countries of the euro area. It has launched five financial assistance programmes, provided financial support, monitored repayment capacity, and engaged with partner institutions in the design of programmes in particular in areas of financial interest. The ESM has just received an expanded mandate from European leaders, which it will implement in the months and years ahead. The ESM will have a stronger role in the analysis of financial stability risks and design of policy measures in programmes, jointly with the European Commission.

During a three-to-six-month period, trainees will closely collaborate with ESM colleagues and assist them in their duties or carry out an agreed research project in line with the department’s agenda.

Prospective candidates can apply for an internship in one of the two divisions in the EMB department:

The Economic and Market Analysis (EMA) Division monitors and analyses macroeconomic and financial market developments in the euro area and globally. Forecasting, fiscal policies, debt sustainability, and bond market structures are particular fields of interest in which the team is seeking support.
The Banking Division monitors and analyses the performance of euro area banks, provides support in the design of financial sector policies and bank restructuring in the context of an adjustment programme and contributes to the evolving framework for banking crisis resolution. Bank analysis, macro-financial risk modelling, financial stability risks, bank restructuring, and the assessment of the regulatory developments on banks’ business models and profitability are the areas in which the team is seeking support.
