Two PhD Students at Wageningen University & Research

Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) are widely used as starter cultures to make fermented dairy products, such as cheese and yoghurt, in which they cause acidification by production of lactic acid and contribute to texture and flavour formation. However, production of these starter cultures is not optimal yet as indicated by incomplete lactose utilization despite control of the pH. Furthermore, in view of the trend that consumers buy more food products containing plant-derived proteins rather than animal derived proteins, new starter cultures with improved functionalities are needed.

At the Hannover Center for Optical Technologies (HOT) and Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, there are two positions as

‍Research Assistants (PhD students) in

1‍) Intelligent optical design and optimisation,
2) Computational photonics and multiphysics simulation,

‍to be filled as soon as possible. The full-time positions are for 3 years (with possible extension). The positions provide the opportunity of further academic qualification, such as a doctoral degree.

PhD Students in Machine learning for optimization at advanced lightsources at Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron

The positions are on the interface between algorithmic research with respect to state-of-the-art machine learning/optimization algorithms and its application to advanced free electron lasers and storage rings such as FLASH, the European XFEL and PETRA IV in Germany, LCLS and SPEAR at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory in the USA. We are seeking for two highly motivated candidates who are bringing together these two fields in order to improve the performance of the free electron lasers and storage rings.
