11-18/10/2015-Understanding and Working with Conflict –Training of Trainers (Vilanova i la Geltrú, Spain)

Καταληκτική Ημερομηνία:
Δευτέρα, Αύγουστος 10, 2015

Understanding and Working with Conflict –Training of Trainers is a training course organised by UNOY Peacebuilders in cooperation with its member organisation Fundación Catalunya Voluntària. It is part of the Understanding and Working with Conflict Training Series, now on its 4th year. This year’s theme is Designing and Implementing Quality Trainings for Conflict Transformation. More information about the previous trainings can be found on workingwithconflict.wordpress.com.

The main aim of the training is to provide trainers, multipliers and potential trainers with training and facilitation skills, with a specific focus on ensuring the quality of the learning process of an educational activity. In the training, we will look at diverse ways of organising a training by looking at appropriate methodologies, and when and how to use them best to maximise learning and creating high-quality learning processes.

The training will use experiential learning methods to facilitate learning focused on communication, inter and intra-personal skills. Key skills and competences of a facilitator and trainer will be presented and put into practice. The training will include an overview of communication and conflict theories and tools, constructive responses to conflict, principles and practice of non-formal learning methodologies, including training concepts related to comfort zones and conflict sensitivity. During the training, participants will get hands-on experience in conducting a training session in groups of 2-4. This practice session will include a video analysis followed by well structured self-reflection, debriefing and feedback sessions from the trainers and other participants. A co-learning environment will be ensured during the whole process.

The training of trainers seeks to build competences (knowledge, skills, attitude) of learners related to two very specific themes:

Conflict Transformation Tools: Conflict and change are a part of human life, and are continuously present in human relationships. Examples of interpersonal, inter-group and organisational conflicts will be used to give participants a deeper understanding of how their day to day interaction with others are entry points for constructive change, at the social, political or cultural level.

Quality Learning Process: This training is designed to empower participants, not just in designing and conducting trainings, but in being able to look at different dynamics that support a quality learning process. Mechanisms include understanding different learning styles; understanding different methodologies and how they are linked to address specific objectives of a session; coherence between program flow, objectives and methods used; and a focus on debriefing process. The participants of the training will have the possibility to contribute directly to a research report into quality in youth peace work with a focus on non-formal learning, created as a result of the organisational assessments focused on Monitoring, Learning and Evaluations within five European UNOY Peacebuilders member organiastions and UNOY itself.

The training course is divided into three phases:

Phase 1- Online Pre-Training (September 1 – October 10 2015)

the online phase will consist of 6 full weeks of online modules and group work. It will prepare the participants for the face-to-face training, especially in the knowledge and theory-based aspects of the topic. The online phase will also serve as a platform for participants to familiarize themselves with each other, and team up in small groups and work together.

Phase 2 – Residential Training (October 11-18 2015)

the residential or face-to-face training is a skills-based and learner-centered training that will include theory, reflection and hands-on practice. It will run for 8 days, and is divided into three parts – 3 days will be dedicated to knowledge-review on peace and conflict and quality design of educational activities; 2 days will be dedicated to training and facilitation skills, and 3 days will be dedicated to training practice by the participants themselves. A transversal theme for these 8 days is the incorporation of inner/personal peace awareness among participants.

Phase 3- post-ToT evaluation and follow-up workshops ( October 20 – December 15 2015)

the last phase is for follow-up and multiplier events. Participants will continue with “peer-to-peer” mentoring and support system in this phase. As mentioned before, the training will also be linked to the research report into quality in youth peace work with a focus on non-formal learning. The final version of the report will be presented during the Young Peacebuilders Forum in The Hague, November 2015.

This ToT will give strong emphasis on training and facilitation skills, as well as quality of the learning process and therefore require participants with very specific profiles to ensure that the training can smoothly flow with the highest standard. Specific profiles for this ToT include the following:

- young people between 18-30 years old
- youth with trainer profiles (have conducted trainings themselves, or sessions or workshops; and have the means and possibilities to conduct further trainings within their organisations)
- multiplier profiles (youth who work with other young people and can give sessions or workshops to young people)
- educator profiles (youth who work with students either through formal or non-formal education)
