PlaCe-ITN is an Innovative Training Network dedicated to the interdisciplinary study of pre-modern ceramics and plasters from the Eastern Mediterranean. It aims at training Early-Stage (pre-doctoral) Researchers (ESRs) to conduct state-of-the-art, science-based research on the technology, use, and provenance of archaeological plasters and ceramics, the most abundant materials in most archaeological sites and assemblages.
The project will employ 14 ESRs across the consortium, offering a wide range of training courses for the analytical study of the first synthetic materials produced by humankind, i.e., plasters and ceramics. It focusses on the technology, know-how, raw materials and tools developed and employed for their production, in different regions of the eastern Mediterranean, in pre-modern societies from prehistory to the post-medieval period. These 14 ESRs will be enrolled in doctoral programmes of the recruiting or collaborating universities. All the ESRs will carry out individual research projects in the realm of archaeological science under a stimulating joint supervision. The main part of each PhD project will be carried out at the recruiting institution. A secondment will be conducted at another PlaCe partner institution, as part of the ESRs’ training and to ensure that the ESRs benefit from application-oriented scientific cooperation and complementary knowledge and skills.
