Biometris and ABGC, Wageningen UR, are looking for 3 PhD candidates for the project titled 'Topbreed: towards precision breeding using genomic prediction'. The projects are implemented jointly with statistical group of the department of Medical Statistics and Bioinformatics, Leiden University Medical Center. (www.lumc.nl/statgen) and is part of the STW Breed4Food partnership.
The project aims to develop statistical genetic methodology to increase the accuracy of genomic prediction for complex phenotypic traits by optimal use of sequence information. This new prediction methodology will approximate as closely as possible total genetic variation, i.e., between genotype variation, by the variance in genomic estimated breeding values (GEBVs), where the latter GEBVs will be based on sequence information. These new prediction methods will depend on the identification of the causal SNPs/genomic regions in contrast to existing prediction methods that depend on long-ranging within-family linkage disequilibrium (LD) between SNPs and QTLs. Furthermore, we will pay attention to models allowing training on multiple traits/environments to predict a broad breeding target. Ultimately, our prediction models should approach or exceed 85% accuracy with sufficient persistence for the accuracy of a target trait in pure line, multiple line and cross bred predictions. The three PhD candidates will work on three different species: dairy cows, pigs and poultry. These species vary in family structure and the range of linkage disequilibrium along the chromosome.
Candidates should hold a degree in mathematics, statistics, statistical genetics, biostatistics, or in animal breeding with a strong statistical component. We are searching for candidates that combine well-developed statistical and mathematical expertise and skills with a strong interest and/or background in biology and genetics.
Candidates are expected to cooperate in a multidisciplinary team and should have a positive attitude towards mobility. Good communication skills and fluency in English is expected from all candidates.
Conditions of employment
We offer challenging position in an inspiring multidisciplinary and international environment. You will be part of a research team involving multiple universities. You are expected to spend time at different locations to ensure that you benefit from the partners involved in your project. You will actively engage in meetings organised by the Breed4Food consortium. The proposed start is in the autumn of 2015.
As a PhD candidate, you will be offered a fulltime position for 4 years, after which you should have completed your PhD thesis and individual training plan. The salary for a PhD candidate starts at € 2.125,- gross per month in the first year and extends to a maximum of € 2.717,- gross per month in the fourth year (in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities).
