Applications are invited for PhD scholarships in Chemistry in the UCD School of Chemistry, University College Dublin, Ireland. Three different research projects in the areas of Inorganic, Organic and Sustainable Chemistry are available as follows:
(i) Synthesis and Characterisation of ParaCEST MRI Agents – Dr Grace Morgan
(ii) New Glycosylation Approaches – Dr Eoghan McGarrigle
(iii) Homogeneous and Heterogeneous H2 Storage and Release Catalysts – Dr James Sullivan & Dr Andrew Phillips.
The successful candidates will be encouraged to develop their chemical knowledge, technical skills and transferable skills. In addition to their primary research project, they will attend courses on the Dublin Chemistry programme and attend group meetings, seminars and international conferences. On graduation they should be well placed to pursue careers in either the chemical industry or as academic researchers.
The School of Chemistry in UCD has excellent research facilities (including 5 NMRs, in-house MassSpec, elemental analysis, X-ray, HPLC, GC) and a strong record in educating PhD students.
Applications are welcome from students with, or expecting to gain, a first class honours degree (or equivalent) in Chemistry or a cognate discipline. Successful candidates can start in September 2015 or January 2016.
Positions will be filled once suitable candidates have been identified so early application is advised. Interviews will be held by Skype or in person as appropriate.
Scholarships for up to 4 years of stipend (€15,000) and fees (EU Level) are available for successful applicants thanks to generous funding from University College Dublin. There will be a requirement to teach in undergraduate laboratories and tutorials as part of the scholarship.
