Three (3) Postdoctoral Positions, Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK), Germany (2015-2016)

The Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) is a member of the Leibniz Association. Counting around 400 employees it is one of the world’s leading research institutes in its field and generates knowledge as a basis for policy, economy and society. At PIK, researchers from the natural and the social sciences are working together across disciplines.

Subject to final approval by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research is seeking to fill three temporary positions:

3 Post-docs (Earth system scientist / physicist) for the Palaeoclimate Modeling Initiative.

The Palaeoclimate Modeling Initiative is a network project funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (pending final approval). It aims to understand climate system dynamics and variability during the last glacial cycle with a view of testing and improving climate models in order to deliver more robust future projections.

Post-doc 1 (ref. no. PalMod-1-1/3-A) will work on two tasks with our 3D Earth System Model. (i) Coupling of our continental ice sheet model PISM-PIK with special regards to the interactions of ice shelves and the ocean, including testing the model for modern and glacial climate conditions. (ii) Performing and analyzing transient climate simulations from glacial conditions into the Holocene, with a focus on abrupt glacial events (Heinrich and Dansgaard-Oeschger events).

Post-doc 2 (ref. no. PalMod-1-1/3-B) will work on further development and improvement of the physical components of the Earth system model of intermediate complexity CLIMBER-2. This focus of this work will be on coupling between ice sheets, atmosphere, land surface and ocean. It is also envisaged to perform simulations of the last glacial cycle to analyse the role of dust feedback in termination of glacial cycles.

Post-doc 3 (ref. no. PalMod-2-1/2) will work on further development and improvement of the marine carbon cycle components of the Earth system model of intermediate complexity CLIMBER-2 with the final aim to simulate CO2 evolution during the last glacial termination.

We offer Post-doc 1 a full-time position from 1 August 2015 to 31 July 2019 and Post-doc 2 and Post-doc 3 from 1 August 2015 to 31 December 2016. Salary and benefits are according to public service regulations in Germany (E13 TV-L).

Required are a doctorate and a proven track record in a relevant field, skills in physics and scientific computing, fluent written and oral skills in the English language and willingness to travel.

The successful candidates will be based at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research in Potsdam, Germany, in Research Domain 1 “Earth System Analysis”.
