This Programme involves a collaboration between the School of Clinical Medicine, the Cambridge Institute for Medical Research, the Department of Pathology, the Department of Veterinary Medicine, and the Department of Biochemistry.
The major themes are cell and molecular biology (including structural and cell biology), immunity, infection and inflammation. The first year of training involves 3 practical mini-projects selected by the students. These are offered by research laboratories involved in each of the Programme themes, as well as literature-driven in-depth analyses of research topics relevant to the overall themes of the Programme. At the end of the first year, students are assessed formally for a Masters degree on the basis of a portfolio of written and practical laboratory projects. Students then choose a supervisor for their 3-year PhD thesis projects, which are carried out during years 2-4.
