The Faculty of Humanities is currently seeking to recruit staff to the position of
2 – 4 Postdoctoral Researchers in History, as of January 1, 2016 until December 31, 2017.
The Department of History and Ethnology conducts high-level research and trains experts in history and ethnology to analyse and produce information about cultural phenomena in different periods of history. The Department’s staff comprises approx. 60 members. At present, ca. 400 students are pursuing a Master’s degree with History or Ethnology as their major subject, and an additional 80 students are actively working on their Ph.D. degree within the Department.
The Department conducts research on the activities of individuals and communities and the conditions under which they occur, as well as their causes and consequences and their multilayered temporality. The profile of the Department’s research is based on comparative research of social crises and changes over long spans of time. The research and education within the Department of History and Ethnology fit in with the profile of the University of Jyväskylä and one of its core areas,Languages, Culture and Societies in a Changing World.
The postdoctoral researcher is expected to strengthen the research and teaching work conducted at the Department, the research focus being on the long-term study on the history of the Finnish society. The postdoctoral researcher will work in the Finnish Centre of Excellence in Historical Research called History of Society: Re-thinking Finland 1400-2000 (Academy of Finland,http://www.uta.fi/yky/coehistory/index.html).
The duties of the postdoctoral researcher emphasize research (including the planning of research projects and acquiring supplemental research funding), teaching and participation in doctoral training. The successful candidate shall have a profound understanding of the research fields represented by the Department of History and Ethnology. Success in the implementation of research activities is vital in the process.
