Fifteen (15) PhD Fellowships in Atrial Fibrillation – AFib-TrainNet consortium, Europe (2016)

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common sustained cardiac arrhythmia, occurring in 1-2% of the general population. More than 6 million Europeans suffer from this arrhythmia and its prevalence is expected to increase by more than two-fold during the next 40 years due to increased life expectancy.

Current options for pharmacological therapy are limited by both low efficacy and side effects, including life‐threatening arrhythmias and severe toxicities. If you have a background in biology, physics, computer science, veterinary medicine, electrophysiology, mathematics, or related, and are currently looking for high quality doctoral-level training in the EU both inside and outside academia, you may be able to impact the epidemic proportions of AF together with a world-class research team.

The European Commission’s Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Innovative training networks bring together universities, research centres and biotech companies from different countries worldwide to train a new generation of researchers. The aim is to boost scientific excellence and business innovation, and enhance researchers’ career prospects through developing skills in entrepreneurship, creativity and innovation. Specifically, the MSCA European Training Networks (ETN) support joint research training, implemented across sectors and in different EU nations.

The AFib-TrainNet ETN (http://afib.ku.dk/) is currently advertising 15 PhD fellowships at 7 partner institutions all over Europe. This doctoral training network consists of top research institutions and highly specialized biotech companies with the complementary competences needed to produce both outstanding research results and an excellent training environment for early stage researchers (ESRs). In the Network, all 15 ESRs from the partner institutions will enroll simultaneously (March 2016), and together benefit from an extensive web of training events. AFib-TrainNet also features a number of longer secondment periods to additional partners within the Network.

This coordinated research exchange reflects our focus on top-level interdisciplinary science, and ensures that ESRs have the opportunity to forge strong relationships cross-network and reap the benefits of the world-class, highly interdisciplinary team of collaborating partners.
