The Cyprus Institute (CyI) is a European non-profit Science and Technology oriented Educational and Research Institution based in Cyprus and led by an acclaimed Board of Trustees. The research agenda of the CyI is pursued at its five Research Centres: The Computation-based Science and Technology Research Centre (CaSToRC), the Science and Technology in Archaeology and Culture Research Centre (STARC), the Energy Environment Water Research Centre (EEWRC), the Climate and Atmosphere Research Centre (CARE-C), and the Science and Technology Driven Policy and Innovation Research Centre (STeDI-RC). The Cyprus Institute invites here applications for a highly qualified and motivated individual to join the Institute as a Post Doctoral Research Fellow for the Dust-DN project (Dust Doctoral Network) at the Environmental Observations Department of CARE-C. The successful applicant will contribute to the scientific outcomes of the project and will carry out research in the field of atmospheric dust and/or remote sensing.
Under the Supervision of the Dust-DN Principal Investigator, the successful candidate will support the activities of the Dust Doctoral Network. The network is a strategic international, interdisciplinary and intersectoral alliance of high-profile beneficiaries and associated partners, able to leverage on unique state-of-the-art facilities. Dust-DN is the first doctoral network on a European in this field of research, and it will provide a critical mass on dust-focused studies. It involves 23 partner institutions based in 9 countries, and it will host a number of doctoral candidates on the common theme of atmospheric dust, with focus on (1) Understanding of the fundamentals of dust microphysical properties and processes; (2) Identifying the influence of source regions on atmospheric dust properties; (3) Socio-economic impacts of dust on health, aviation and energy production; and (4) Dust in the global climate system.
Among the responsibilities of the Post-Doctoral Fellow will be to support the principal investigator with the coordination of the network, the organisation of training events and workshops, the dissemination, exploitation and communication activities, and the reporting of the project to the European Research Executive Agency (REA).
The successful candidate is expected to enhance the scientific expertise of the institute in terms of research in the field of atmospheric dust and/or remote sensing, related to the objectives of Dust-DN, and is expected to provide mentoring and guidance to the doctoral candidates hosted at CyI. In this respect, the candidates should submit their vision, together with the application.
The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to engage in teaching activities within the Master’s and PhD programs of the CyI, and/or within the Dust-DN training events.
In general, the Post-Doctoral Research Fellow is expected to:
Conduct research to further develop research skills and competencies, and publishing novel and significant results in selective peer-reviewed journals and conferences.
Contribute to all aspects of sponsored Research, Innovation and/or Development projects (including conducting research, co-authoring publications, implementing deliverables, reporting activities, dissemination activities, etc).
Contribute to new grant proposals preparation.
The initial period of the appointment will be for a duration of 24 months with the possibility of renewal, depending on performance and availability of funds. An internationally competitive remuneration package will be offered, which is commensurate with the level of experience of the successful candidate.
