The Department of Economics at the University of Southampton is recruiting new PhD students in Economics for entry in September 2016 and there are some ESRC PhD studentships available.
ESRC studentships are available for Economics and Advanced Quantitative Methods (AQM) and they pay for fees plus a yearly stipend of about £14,057 for three years (+3 PhD only) or four years (1+3 Master plus PhD). Students in economics are usually eligible for an additional £3,000 maintenance grant per year. The Department of Economics is allocated with two PhD studentships and the rest are filled in open competition within the Social Science Doctoral Training Centre.
As one of the top economics departments in the UK, we are highly respected and recognised internationally in many fields. Our interests span a very wide range of applied and policy oriented fields (Behavioural Economics, Development Economics, Finance and Investments, Health Economics, Labour Economics) as well as more theoretical domains (Econometrics, Game Theory, Quantitative Macroeconomics).
We offer an active and stimulating research environment in which our postgraduate research students play a crucial part. As a PhD student in Southampton you will be taught and supervised by academics who are internationally renowned experts in their fields. Students entering the PhD programme benefit from advanced training in economics and econometrics modules in the first year. In addition to these core units the Economics Department is also running different complementary field modules taught by internationally renowned experts visiting the department on a regular basis.
