The University may make an appointment at Research Fellow II (Grade 8) to candidates who do not yet meet the criteria for a Senior Research Fellow, but who have experience of leading small research projects, or parts of a large project, including supervising the work of others and have managed or monitored a research budget. See full job description.
The Sussex Sustainability Research Programme (SSRP) wishes to appoint up to four outstanding Senior Research Fellows from across natural sciences, social sciences, policy and law to work within the programme’s thematic areas in interdisciplinary sustainability research.
The University of Sussex together with the Institute of Development Studies (IDS) has launched the SSRP to provide a lively and intellectually vibrant research environment to address complex socio-economic, policy/governance, technical and environmental challenges across the natural and social sciences. SSRP’s activities will enhance both the understanding of complex sustainability challenges and the approaches through which more sustainable development pathways can be negotiated. An overview of research within the SSRP can be found at www.sussex.ac.uk/ssrp.
The successful candidate(s) will work with the SSRP director and programme members, individually and with colleagues in the Schools of Business, Management & Economics, Global Studies, Law, Politics & Sociology and Life Sciences and the IDS, and the wider University, to develop a portfolio of interdisciplinary sustainability research. They will also have an opportunity to teach in areas suited to their expertise.
The ideal candidate(s) will be a researcher who is outstanding at the level applied for, with an established or developing international research profile in sustainability research, and demonstrable experience of working effectively in interdisciplinary initiatives. The ideal candidate(s) will have experience of attracting and managing research funds and engaging effectively with external parties, e.g. policy makers and non-academic stakeholders. Good communication skills, a commitment to innovation, and an ability and aspiration to work productively with academics across a range of disciplines are essential for this position.
Interested candidates are encouraged to make an informal enquiry to the interim director, Dr Jörn Scharlemann, j.scharlemann@sussex.ac.uk.
Applications should be accompanied by a full CV, a statement of research interests and aspirations (no more than 4 pages), an indication of your preferred School to be based in, and names of three academic referees.
