Every summer since 2012, Weimar becomes a meeting point for digital avant-garde artists, culture enthusiasts and scientists. The Genius Loci Weimar festival for site-specific audio-visual art and interactive facade projections now ranks among the leading international events in this area. Weimar offers an abundance of buildings and spaces that have played an important role in culture and history – also outside of the city limits.
Every year, new buildings and structures in and around Weimar are chosen to become a part of the competition and festival. It is the aim of Genius Loci Weimar to draw attention to the spirit of the location with respect to the history, architecture and other visible and invisible layers of meaning, and to bring these to life using the innovative techniques of the media art of video mapping.
The primary objective thought Genius Loci Weimar 2016 and challenge the artistic skill to capture the spirit of the place in the interaction between human creativity and natural conditions. This year’s locations are the Tempelherrenhaus, a citation of a mystic but fictional and idealized look at the past, the Stern as a meeting place for wanderers with different origins and destinations and the Sternbrücke as a symbol for the overcoming of boundaries in nature and society.
Eligibility
Contestants are invited to submit their artistic concepts by 23:59h (CET) on 23 March 2016, including:
- A thirty-second audiovisual video clip (HD);
- An explanatory text (max. 300 words);
- A letter of motivation from the participant or group, including a self-description and appropriate references. As part of the application process, this text will be professionally edited to produce a definitive self-description (max. 300 words);
- Details of the support team and designated representatives.
Prizes
- Commissions will comprise the creation of a 10-15 minute long high-resolution audio-visual production to be presented in the form of video mapping on the respective locations during the festival weekend (12 to 14 August 2016);
- A budget of EUR 15,000 will be made available for the completion of each prize-winning submission;
