The Department of Sociology and the Amsterdam Institute for Social Science Research (AISSR) are seeking PhD candidates and postdoctoral researchers to work on the project ‘FamilyComplexity: Intergenerational Reproduction and Solidarity in an Era of Family Complexity’ (2015-2020), for which Matthijs Kalmijn, Professor of Sociology at the UvA, has been awarded a €2,5 million advanced grant by the European Research Council (ERC).
Four projects are available:
- Family complexity & intergenerational reproduction;
- Family complexity & intergenerational solidarity;
- Family complexity & educational careers, and
- Methodological challenges of multi-actor data.
The researchers will work together on the development, collection, and analysis of a large new multi-actor survey on intergenerational relationships that forms the basis of the ERC project. The post- doctoral researcher will also have management responsibilities in the larger team that carries out the ERC project and will actively collaborate with Statistics Netherlands. Activities connected to the design and collection of the survey data are explicitly part of the task of all researchers. Project 3 will be based more strongly on analyses of register data. Project 2 will also use vignette data that have been collected.

Successful applicants will have the following credentials:
- a completed Research Master (for PhD candidates) or PhD (for postdoctoral researchers) in sociology, demography, or another relevant social science discipline;
