The Centre for Photonic Metamaterials (www.metamaterials.org.uk), established in 2010, is engaging in an ambitious research agenda to develop the next generation of metamaterials and explore their technological applications in photonic devices. With access to one of the largest state-of-the-art cleanroom facilities in Europe and total funding to date exceeding £10-million, it occupies a world-leading position in metamaterials research.
Metamaterials constitute a paradigm shift in the design of artificial materials, where structuring at length scales smaller than the wavelength of light results in exotic properties not available in naturally occurring materials. Photonic metamaterials are currently driving a search for new physics, new materials and unusual functionalities that will shape future energy and information technologies.
Available projects span a broad range of topics, including, but not limited to, quantum and reconfigurable metamaterials, high-resolution imaging, and novel plasmonic materials. All projects will include aspects of state-of-the-art nanofabrication, optical characterization and spectroscopy, and computational modelling.
We are seeking bright and highly motivated postgraduate research students of outstanding calibre to join our group. As the projects cross multiple disciplinary boundaries, we invite applications from students with a background in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, and related subjects. Applicants must have a first or upper second-class degree (or equivalent) from a recognized university, and a solid grounding in Optics/Electromagnetism.
The studentships are fully funded for 3.5 years, including tuition fees and a tax-free bursary.
