The EU-funded C-IPM project will be jointly hosting a workshop on ‘Breeding for Integrated Pest Management’ with The Plant Breeding and Acclimatisation Institute (IHAR), National Research Institute of Poland, from 4 to 6 July 2016.
Breeding for crops that are resistant to pests is one tool that can be used in integrated pest management. This practice can reduce the use of pesticides.
The organisers are putting together a programme that will focus on breeding, combining available techniques and measures to foster IPM, and gaining an overview of what is currently available and which bottlenecks there are in terms of breeding and IPM in general.
The main objectives of the workshop are following:
- provide an overview of the existing national programmes on topics related to breeding relevant to IPM.
- gather international experts and stimulate exchange of information and expertise on the ongoing development of resistant/tolerant germplasms that adapt to IPM system,
- review whether the focus on IPM requires breeders to take a different approach than the traditional one and seek experts’ opinion in this regard,
- discuss how the plant resistance to diseases, pests and weeds can be improved when introduced within the context of IPM.
