The Gran Sasso Science Institute (GSSI), based in l’Aquila, Italy, offers post-graduate training to obtain “Philosophiae Doctor” (Ph.D) degrees in the following fields:
- Astroparticle Physics
The main aim of the curriculum in Astroparticle Physics is to provide the entrance points and the scientific and cultural tools to participate successfully to the researches in this interdisciplinary and young research field, grown at the intersection of particle physics, nuclear physics, astrophysics and cosmology. The program addresses some of the most pressing and fundamental questions in science today: the origin and the evolution of our universe, the nature of dark matter and dark energy, the study of neutrinos, of cosmic rays, of gravitational waves. A special attention will be given to experimental and phenomenological aspects.
Places/Scholarships: 10
- Mathematics in Natural, Social and Life Sciences
The PhD program in Mathematics in Natural, Social and Life Sciences aims to guide graduate students to deal not only with the most classic aspects of Mathematics, such as Partial Differential Equations, Stochastic Analysis, Mathematical Physics and Numerical Analysis but also with emerging new challenges proposed by non traditional domains of application, requiring the development of new tools and inter and multidisciplinary approaches. One additional PhD position will be financed by Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT) for the research program in Network Communications in Plant Roots (see the following table*).
Places/Scholarships: 10 + 1 for the research program in Network Communications in Plant Roots
- Computer Science
The PhD program in Computer Science focuses is concerned with heterogeneous distributed systems and their interactions. Different perspectives are offered to provide students with the necessary tools for the design, the implementation, the management and the use of distributed systems. The main research areas of interest are: efficient algorithms for communication networks and social networks, formal methods for systems correctness and analysis, software engineering for efficient and resilient applications.

- Urban Studies and Regional Science
The aim of the PhD in Urban Studies and Regional Science is to address issues related to local development with specific reference to industrial clusters, economic, social and spatial dynamics of cities, regional development, governance of urban policies, the role of knowledge and innovation, social inclusion. The methodological perspective of research and teaching is multidisciplinary, combining regional and urban economics, economic and human geography, spatial planning and sociology.
