FutureScapes Writing Contest “Write your story, change the world”, 2016

FutureScapes is an annual writing competition that asks writers to envision a particular sort of world, and tell a story about it.

Democracy reigns in cities. It is the one place where the average person can readily seek and gain office, shape major policy decisions, and see the fruit of their efforts in real-time. In his seminal study of why democracy managed to take root and flourish in America, Alexis de Tocqueville observed that local government is America’s schoolhouse of democracy. Because a city so frequently touches the private interests of its inhabitants, and because political offices are within the reach of almost anyone, cities produce citizens with democratic skills, interests, and ambitions.

This year the theme is Cities of Empowerment.

Eligibility

Anyone interested in the topic. However, professionals are not eligible.

In particular, FutureScapes seeks:
- Works of short fiction up to 8,000 words, written in accordance with this year’s prompt;
- Compelling stories that explore the nuance of technology, science, politics, and/or policy, without forgetting about plot and character;
- Stories that show us both the positives and negatives of this possible future;
- Stories that can provide a road-map for cities, states, and nations to follow;
- Stories that may be built in a rich and full world, but that manage to show us the reality of a single city, neighborhood, and/or life.

Prize
- First Place- USD 2,000;
- Second Place- USD 1,000;
- 4 Runners up- USD 500 each;
- Publication.
