The Centre
The Herman Deleeck Centre for Social Policy (CSB) is one of five centres of research excellence at the University of Antwerp. Its purpose is to acquire empirically and theoretically substantiated insights into the functioning of welfare state institutions in a changing socioeconomic, demographic, ecological, and political environment. The central focus of the Centre is on the analysis of inequality and poverty.

The Research Project
Under supervision of Professor Koen Decancq you will conduct research on the measurement of multidimensional well-being, inequality, and poverty. One of the main challenges in a multidimensional framework is to make well-being comparisons between people. To do that, weights need to be assigned to the different dimensions of well-being. You will study how these weights can be selected in a way which respects the view on the good life of the concerned individuals. This work will be geared towards obtaining a Ph.D. in Social and Economic Sciences or Economic Sciences depending on your preferences and background.

Your Profile

We are looking for motivated researchers with
- a Master’s Degree in Economics or Social and Economic Sciences,
- a strong academic track record (preference will be given to holders of an honours degree),
- a solid background in quantitative methods, econometrics, and micro economics,
- a keen interest in the measurement of multidimensional well-being, inequality, and poverty,
- a sense of independence, a creative mind, and a strong motivation to work within an multidisciplinary team,
- excellent English language skills.

We offer
We offer a stimulating and pleasant research environment that is conducting novel research on a topic with high societal relevance. Candidates are expected to enrol in the Doctoral Program of the University of Antwerp and will be encouraged to develop their skills by means of doctoral courses, summer schools, etc. We offer a Ph.D. scholarship for 1 year, renewable after a positive evaluation up to 4 years.
