18-21/09/2016 - 12th World Conference on Injury Prevention and Safety Promotion (Finland)

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), more than 5 million people die each year as a result of injuries, accounting for 9% of deaths globally. This includes injuries from traffic crashes, acts of violence against oneself or others, burns, drowning, falls, poisonings, among other causes. The 12th World Conference on Injury Prevention and Safety Promotion, hosted in Tampere, Finland, will bring together the world’s leading researchers, practitioners, policymakers and advocates in the field of injury prevention to discuss the application of best practices to policies and programs worldwide. Sessions will be held on a variety of related topics.

To help improve coverage of this global public health topic, the International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) with the support of WHO invites journalists to apply for the Safety 2016 Reporting Fellowship. In collaboration with WHO, ICFJ will select 12 journalists from around the world to attend a two-day workshop on injury prevention. The fellows will then participate in and report on the Safety 2016 conference from September 18-21, 2016, in Tampere, Finland.

Eligibility:
- Journalists’ professional qualifications;
- Relevant experience such as demonstrated interest in the topic of injury prevention or road safety;
- English-language proficiency;
- Endorsement by a newsroom manager.

Costs:
The Safety 2016 Reporting Fellowship program will cover all fellowship-related costs including travel to the conference, accommodation and registration.

How to apply?
The mode of applying is online.

Applicants will be asked to provide the following documents:
- An essay (no more than 500 words) detailing the motivation and goals for seeking the fellowship, which includes three specific changes you hope to make in how you work as a result of the workshop;
- A fleshed-out story idea for a safety;
- A commitment to produce at least three safety stories during and after the conference;
- A letter of support from an editor or newsroom manager;
- A resume or curriculum vitae;
- At least two samples of work focusing on safety or injury prevention published/posted/broadcast recently (no earlier than 2014).

ICFJ will inform the finalists by August 5, 2016.
