The Professional Doctorate in Engineering (PDEng) Programme Energy & Process Technology s a 2-year post MSc technological programme with a focus on technological design. This programme at the University of Twente contains an educational part that will be followed at the University (~50%), and a design project (~50%) that will be carried out at the company HoSt FT. The educational programme will have an in-depth and broadening character with ample attention for professional development and will be partly tailored to the design project. In collaboration with HoSt FT, high level, creative and new designs for complex issues will be aimed at.
Biomass is a sustainable energy source which can be used for the production of heat, electricity, fuels, chemicals, etc. One of the best possibilities to utilize its potential is efficient combustion in boilers. However, the complex physicochemical properties of biomass make the combustion process very challenging for combustion equipment.
The goal of this project is the development of an economically attractive gasification and combustion technology in a grate furnace that can utilize the full potential of the biomass waste stream for production of renewable electricity and heat. This technique should be able to realize low temperatures in the gasification zone by recirculation of flue gas under the grate followed by a separated combustion zone. The project demands from the PDEng candidate a modelling and design of the processes that occur on a grate and in the furnace with focus on:
modelling of gasification process on the grate and flue gas recirculation to assure optimal oxygen supply.
CFD modelling and design of a furnace for maximizing energy content in flue gases and minimizing emissions.
engineering modelling of material and energy flows.
Please send your letter of motivation, with a curriculum vitae, a list with grades of courses attended, references and, if applicable, a list of publications before 15-02-2015.
