The agri-food sector is Ireland’s largest indigenous industry and a key player in the national economy. Food Harvest 2020 is the current roadmap for the Irish agri-food industry and sets ambitious targets for growth, including a 33% increase in the value of primary production and 42 % increase in exports from the agriculture, fisheries and forestry sector.
Calves for beef production in Ireland come from two sources, the suckler cow herd and the dairy cow herd, which comprise ca. 1.1 million cows each. More recently, in the republic of Ireland 6.5 %, equivalent to ca. 132,297 calves, excluding stillborns, die in their first year of life (AIM; Bovine Statistic report DAFM, 2013). This mortality is a colossal cost and opportunity lost to the Irish beef industry and national economy.
