The Baltic Defence College (BALTDEFCOL) is a modern, future-oriented, English-language based international institution of the Baltic states providing professional military education with focus on the Baltic region, Eastern Europe and Russia and a Euro-Atlantic scope. The college serves as a professional military education institution at the operational and strategic level, applying contemporary educational principles, effective management and best use of intellectual and material resources. Our mission is to educate military and security/defence-related civilian personnel from the Baltic States as well as their NATO/EU allies and other partners, to contribute to applied research focused on security and defence policies while promoting international cooperation and networking. Our educational programme consists of four residential courses: the Senior Leaders’ Course at the strategic-political level, the Higher Command Studies Course at the strategic level and the Joint Command and General Staff Course, as well as the Civil Servants Course, both at the operational level. In addition, BALTDEFCOL conducts and co-hosts international conferences and seminars, including the well established annual conferences on Russia and Baltic Military History.
We are looking for a post-doctoral fellow to develop specific expertise on Russian military strategy, thinking and capabilities at the college and to incorporate corresponding realities of the permanently changing defence and security environment into our education. This will involve the delivery of lectures and electives to students of all courses and to contribute to the conduct of our conferences (namely the Annual Conference on Russia in February 2018), seminars and roundtable discussions. The fellowship position offers the unique opportunity to be pioneer in the area of expertise for the Senior Leaders’ Course in fall 2017, to educate future high-level military and civilian leaders (in particular of the Higher Command Studies Course in April 2017 and from January to June 2018) and to undertake applied research relevant to the position. To master the requirements of the position proficient knowledge of the Russian language is of particular importance.
The selected person will be entitled to a budget for research and professional development related activities (2.000 EUR in 2017 and 1.000 EUR in 2018), compensation of moving expenses to and from Tartu (airfare or land travel cost,, shipping of baggage of up to 100 kg), accommodation at our modern, fully equipped dormitory (240 EUR/month at own cost) and free of charge use of the college’s sports facility. BALTDEFCOL also offers staff team building events and supports participation in various recreational activities of the host city Tartu.
