What is hate speech and how can it be effectively countered? That is the guiding question of the international training Citizen Journalists on Tour. It offers an opportunity to:
Deepen your understanding of the phenomenon of hate speech;
Learn different strategies how to counter hate speech on the internet;
Network and develop own ideas with participants from six different countries.
In light of the political right turn in many European countries we witness an increasingly hostile atmosphere towards Muslims, refugees, and other minority groups. For many people the internet serves as a platform to spread their racist views. The aim of the training is to empower youth workers and other multipliers to counter hate speech.
In the first part of the program participants learn to recognize discriminatory posts and are familiarized with media literacy aspects of hate speech. As a next step, they embark on a field trip to Berlin and interview various representatives of the media, civil society and political institutions. Finally, they acquire practical skills on countering hate speech and learn how to apply these skills in their individual field of activity.
We will actively involve the participants and engage our brains, hearts and bodies. Our methodological approach includes theoretical inputs, discussions, workshops, reflections, best-practice examples, excursions, cooperation games, open space and others. The seminar language will be English.
