10 PhD Scholarships in Communication Sciences, University of Tampere, Finland (2018)

The Faculty of Communication Sciences at the University of Tampere invites applications for TEN SALARIED DOCTORAL STUDENT POSITIONS. The positions are for a fixed-term of one to four years. Successful candidates must accept the position by 1 January 2018 at the earliest and by 1 April 2018 at the latest.

Successful candidates will pursue a doctoral degree in one of the following doctoral programmes at the University of Tampere:

- Doctoral Programme in Communication, Media and Theatre (several fields of study)
- Doctoral Programme in Information Studies and Interactive Media
- Doctoral Programme in Interactive Technology
- Doctoral Programme in Language Studies (several fields of study)
- Doctoral Programme in Literary Studies (two fields of study)

Full-time doctoral studies are expected to be completed in four years. Fixed-term contracts can be drawn up for a period of one to four years; the length of the contract depends on how far along in their studies the successful candidates are and when they expect to graduate. The personal study and supervisory plans of doctoral students define the terms of their dissertation work and are used to monitor their progress annually. The personal study and supervisory plan includes a detailed annual working schedule.

In addition to the dissertation work, doctoral students teach or participate in other tasks connected to their studies at the School.

Successful candidates must have a higher university degree, be currently pursuing a doctoral degree in one of the Faculty’s doctoral programmes and submit a study and supervisory plan and a research plan for evaluation. If the candidate does not have a right to pursue a doctoral degree at the Faculty of Communication Sciences, the candidate must apply for the study right with a separate application at the same time when applying for the salaried doctoral student position (please see instructions). In this case the candidate fills in two different online forms: one for the study right and one for the salaried doctoral student position. Both application periods end on the 31 October 2017.

Successful candidates are selected based on the level of promise that they show (general merits of the applicant, academic performance, scientific level and feasibility of the research plan, progress of the work, supervision arrangements, and student’s own motivation) and this is evaluated on the basis of their CV, transcript of academic records and study and research plans.

The salary will be based on the demand level chart for the teaching and research staff of Finnish Universities. The preliminary level of demand is 2 - 4, depending on how far advanced the candidate's research is. The basic salary will be supplemented with a performance increase based on the employee's individual performance. The positions carry a four-month trial period.
