The Department of Social and Behavioral Health (SBH) at VCU is accepting applicants for full-time Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) students. The PhD program prepares students that have a master’s degree in a health-related field (public health, psychology, social sciences) to plan, deliver, and evaluate ways to prevent disease, reduce health risks, and improve quality of life; to influence individual and community health and healthcare delivery; to understand and influence communication as it occurs in a variety of health care settings, and to develop and advocate for health initiatives. We offer innovative instruction, personalized mentorship, and applied research experiences in an interdisciplinary setting. Students learn to employ behavioral and social science theory and methods to understand the individual and social determinants of health behaviors, illness and disease. We prepare students to serve as public health researchers and professionals in a variety of settings including universities, health departments and other governmental and non-governmental agencies.
Four years of financial support, including tuition, health insurance and annual stipend, are available to qualified applicants.
