14/07-10/08/2019 - International Byzantine Greek Summer School (Δουβλίνο)

The Department of Classics, Trinity College Dublin is delighted to welcome back the International Byzantine Greek Summer School (IBGSS) in 2018. This well-established course, directed by Dr Anthony Hirst, came to Dublin in 2016 after having run successfully for fourteen years at the University of Birmingham (2012-15) and Queen’s University Belfast (2002-11). The course teaches Byzantine Greek at Beginners, Intermediate and Advanced level and allows early learners to engage with original Byzantine texts from the start.

The International Byzantine Greek Summer School offers courses in medieval Greek language at three levels:

1. LEVEL 1 BEGINNERS (14 – 27 JULY)
   The Level 1 course is for absolute beginners in Byzantine Greek. It starts with the Greek alphabet and takes students through the basic grammar of Greek to the point where they can begin to translate simple Greek texts with the aid of a dictionary
2. LEVEL 2 INTERMEDIATE (28 JULY– 10 AUGUST)
   The Level 2 course carries straight on from the Level 1 course, completing the coverage of basic Greek grammar and introducing students to a variety of Greek texts. Each year a number of people take both courses.
   If the number of participants allows it (as it did in most earlier years) the Intermediate course will be taught at two levels, Level 2 (Post-Beginners) and Level 2.5 (Higher Intermediate).
3. LEVEL 3 ADVANCED READING (28 JULY –10 AUGUST)
   Level 3 is an Advanced Reading course for learners who successfully completed Level 2/2.5 in a previous year and have made further progress since, or those have acquired the necessary familiarity with Greek by other means.
