ETH Zurich is one of the world’s leading universities specialising in science and technology. It is renowned for its excellent education, its cutting-edge fundamental research and its efforts to put new knowledge and innovations directly into practice. The Public Policy Group and the Center for Law & Economics at the Department of Humanities, Social and Political Sciences, invite applications for PhD student positions in empirical political economy.
Our research groups employ quantitative methods to study institutions, public policy, and political behavior. The research of the Public Policy Group focuses on causal effects of public policies and political institutions with the aim of establishing quantitative evidence relevant for policy makers and society at large. The research of the Center for Law & Economics focuses on empirical analysis of the law and legal systems using techniques from applied microeconometrics, natural language processing, and machine learning. The PhD students will be jointly supervised and embedded in both research groups. We offer the opportunity to work on important topics of empirical political economy in a dynamic and collaborative research environment. The initial appointment will be for one year with expected renewal for three more years. Salary is competitive and paid according to ETH standards.
The ideal candidate will have, at the time of appointment, completed a Master's degree in Economics or Political Science, with a strong focus on Statistics or Econometrics. Rigorous statistics training in causal inference and/or machine learning, and a strong command of Stata, R, or Python, are desired. All work-related interactions are in English and excellent English writing skills are essential.
