Are you interested in high-end technological design? Then, the Professional Doctorate in Engineering (PDEng) programme Energy & Process Technology is very interesting for you. The PDEng programme is a 2-year post MSc technological programme with a focus on technological design. This programme at the University of Twente contains an educational part that will be followed at the University (~50%), and a design project (~50%) that will be carried out at the company Triogen B.V. The educational programme will have an in-depth and broadening character with ample attention for professional development and will be partly tailored to the design project. In collaboration with Triogen, high level, creative and new designs for complex issues will be aimed at.
PDEng Design Project
In various industrial processes, there is a huge amount of unused energy emitted in in the form of heat. This waste or residual heat can be converted into useable electricity by a process called Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC). Triogen B.V. of The Netherlands is developing and marketing such an ORC system, which is already deployed for heat contained in the flue gas of gas engines and wood firing plants. An important next application is the use of exhaust gas heat from Diesel engines. When cooling these exhaust gasses, certain deposits originating from the combustion of the diesel engine fuel used will arise on the surface of the exhaust gas heat exchanger.
The goal of this project is the development of an economically attractive and energy efficient cleaning system for the exhaust gas heat exchanger, taking into account the character of the deposit arising from fuels as used by engines in the market area of Triogen. The project will demand from the PDEng candidate to make an inventory and characterization of possible deposits, modelling of the gas side flow in the heat exchanger, inventory of possible cleaning methods, selection of the preferred method and the design of a system. This system will be build and tested in actual operating conditions by Triogen, where the PDEng student will play his role in the evaluation of the results.
