The Centre for Media and Journalism Studies, Faculty of Arts, welcomes applications for two four-year PhD positions to set up a journalistic start up and conduct auto-ethnographies reflecting on what it means to be an entrepreneurial journalist. The PhD projects are embedded in the NWO Vidi project “Entrepreneurship at Work: Analysing practice, labour, and creativity in journalism”, supervised by Dr Tamara Witschge. Key responsibilities
The successful candidates will be expected to:
- set up a journalistic start up
- conduct auto-ethnographic research reflecting on the entrepreneurial process
- complete a PhD dissertation within the four year period
- submit their research results for publication in academic journals
- present their research at workshops and conferences
- participate in the PhD training programme of the Graduate School for Humanities and the Dutch Research School for Media Studies
- actively participate in research meetings of the project team and the Centre for Media and Journalism Studies
- help organise and participate in the knowledge valorisation activities.
Requirements
- completed MA degree by the time of appointment in one of the following or related disciplines: Media Studies, Journalism Studies, Communication Science, History, Sociology, Economics, Organisational / Management Studies
- journalistic experience and/or training
- interested in setting up a start up alone or together with others
- excellent oral and written communication skills in the English language
- excellent academic record (as shown by a list of MA grades and timely conclusion of MA education)
- ability to work independently, and as part of a team
- capable of carrying out their research within the allotted four years
- interested in being part of an international research community as well as the (inter)national journalism environment.
