The IMPRS-SurMat is a doctoral programme that combines excellent research conditions with a well-structured interdisciplinary curriculum. It represents a unique cooperative effort involving the Max-Planck-Institut für Eisenforschung (MPIE) in Duesseldorf, the Max-Planck-Institut für Kohlenforschung in Muelheim, and the Ruhr-Universität Bochum.
The research focuses on materials related questions on energy conversion. The laboratories within the IMPRS-SurMat provide the most modern surface and interface analytical techniques and surface technologies. For theoretical studies high performance computational facilities and cutting edge computational tools are available.
