PhD Scholarships in Social & Public Health Sciences, University of Glasgow, UK (2016)

Καταληκτική Ημερομηνία:
Δευτέρα, Φεβρουάριος 15, 2016

Funded PhD studentships are available at the MRC/CSO Social and Public Health Sciences Unit, University of Glasgow.

The aim of the MRC/CSO Social and Public Health Sciences Unit (www.glasgow.ac.uk/sphsu) is to improve human health and wellbeing via the study of social, behavioural, economic, cultural and environmental influences on health. Our more specific objectives include:

studying the multiple interacting processes through which biological, social, behavioural, economic, cultural and environmental factors influence physical and mental health and health behaviours over the lifecourse;
discovering mechanisms which can modify these processes and have the potential to improve public health in a complex and changing world;
developing and evaluating interventions which harness these mechanisms to improve public health and reduce social inequalities in health; and
influencing policy and practice by communicating the results and implications of research to a range of audiences.
Studentships will commence in October 2016. These are 3-year positions for those who have a Masters degree, or equivalent training, in an appropriate scientific discipline. Opportunities also exist for 4-year positions in order that an appropriate Masters degree can be attained prior to commencing the doctorate (eg MRes in Sociology and Research Methods http://www.gla.ac.uk/postgraduate/taught/sociologyresearchmethods/#/; Master in Public Health http://www.gla.ac.uk/postgraduate/taught/publichealth/). We provide diverse training opportunities for all aspects of research and for transferable academic and generic skills.

The first stage of the application process is for you to consider the eligibility requirements.

The academic requirement for entry is a first or upper second class degree or equivalent.
Residential and other requirements can be found here.
UK National and UK Resident Applicants – Full funding is available, for university fees and a stipend.

Other European Economic Area (EEA) Applicants – Partial funding is available, covering university fees only.

Non-EEA Applicants – Unfortunately you are not eligible for MRC funding.

Eligible candidates are encouraged to propose their own topic, or to identify a topic from the list of supervisor-proposed topics. Topics proposed by candidates should fit within the Unit’s mission and be relevant to one or more of our six research programmes. The suggested topics are listed by programme, and are indicative of the range of topics across which we would welcome applications. Our programmes of research and studentship topics can be viewed here. Any one candidate may propose a maximum of two possible topics. Applications are welcome from candidates from any discipline relevant to the Unit’s interdisciplinary social science-led research.

In order to prepare your application, potential candidates should contact the Programme Leader of the programme in which the proposed topic is listed, or where the candidate-proposed topic best fits, to discuss their proposal prior to submission. Contact details are contained within the programme pages. Programme Leaders will be available from 5th January 2016. Any applicant who has a specific topic area that fits with the Unit’s mission, but for which they are not sure which programme leader(s) to contact, should send a brief outline of their proposed topic to Professor Laurence Moore, Unit Director (laurence.moore@glasgow.ac.uk) who will advise on how to proceed further.
