Three (3) Postdoctoral Positions in Engineering, Eindhoven University of Technology, Netherlands (2016-2017)

The booming numbers of devices with access to the internet for body networks, personal networks and in-door access networks imply that exponential growth in Internet driven traffic will continue at compounded annual growth rates of 30-60%. The current communication backbone of our information driven society is based on single mode fibre (SMF) where the most powerful current SMF systems are based on 100Gbit/s coherent transmission, exploiting polarization and wavelength division multiplexing together with advanced modulation formats and digital signal processing. With these methods, data speeds up to several Tbit/s have been achieved, but due to non-linearities, the capacity of SMF is rapidly approaching its fundamental capacity. In high-demanding areas such as datacenter interconnects, serious traffic congestion problems are emerging.

To increase the capacity in a fiber, a new multiplexing paradigm termed space division multiplexing (SDM) has been introduced recently. At TU/e, SDM has been demonstrated by exploiting multiple cores within the same fiber cladding, where multiple modes are guided in each of these few-mode cores. With a 3-mode 7-cores fibre, we have shown transmission rates of 255 Terabits/s over a single fiber.

We are looking for three strong post-doctoral researchers or industrial applied research engineers to take up these challenges required to bring this research forward.

Requirements
Position 1:
- PhD in Electronic Engineering, Embedded systems, System on Chip design and/or Signal Processing, or an equivalent industrial engineering background
- Algorithms, design, and experimental evaluation of on-chip and off-chip FPGAs/SoCs for demodulating fully mixed spatial channels coherently.
- Dynamic and partial FPGA re-configuration and programmability
- Electronic function synthesis to minimise computational complexity, Place and Route, Floorplan.
- Development of DSP algorithms operating at high data baud rates
- Embedded system design
- Knowledge of C/C++, Handel-C, VHDL, Verilog HDL and/or VLSI prototyping is required.
- Ability to work with experts from a broad range of scientific and technology backgrounds
- Fluent spoken and written English

Position 2:
- PhD degree in Applied Physics, Optical Science, Electrical Engineering, or an equivalent industrial engineering background
- Solid background in integration process technology, preferably with Silicon, Silicon Nitride or Silicon on Insulator materials
- Solid background in design and modelling for photonic devices
- Affinity for photonic devices and circuits
- Ability to work with experts from a broad range of scientific and technology backgrounds
- Fluent spoken and written English

Position 3:
- PhD degree in Applied Physics, Optical Science, Electrical Engineering, or an equivalent industrial engineering background
- Solid background in bench-top laboratory setups
- Solid background in Matlab, C/C++/C# programming for building up test processes
- Affinity for coherent transmission systems measurements and digital signal processing
- Ability to work with experts from a broad range of scientific and technology backgrounds
- Fluent spoken and written English
