The Helmholtz Research School on "Integrated Materials Development for Novel High-Temperature Alloys - IMD" provides a structured educational program and a platform for a knowledge-based and research-oriented qualification for PhD students in the area of Materials Science and Engineering.
For the research period commencing in spring 2016, the research school invites applications fo 6 PhD scholarships (maximum duration for funding: 3 years).
The following Research Areas are part of the Scientific Program:
Thermodynamic modeling of liquid and solid solution phases of directionally solidified eutectic alloys
Influence of processing conditions on microstructure and mechanical properties of directionally solidified eutectic alloys
Quantitative phase-field modeling of 3D eutectic microstructure formation in the presence of a compression load
Residual stresses in directionally solidified eutectic alloys
Discrete dislocation dynamics simulation in two phase eutectic alloys
Analytical TEM analyses of matrix fiber interfaces, creep deformation and fracture mechanisms
Micromechanical finite element simulations of directionally solidified eutectic alloys
The research school provides PhD students with the opportunity to contribute to the Research Field Energy within the Helmholtz mission. All scholars work jointly in a collaborative interdisciplinary team contributing to theoretical basis and experimental realization in the development of innovative high temperature alloys. The research school provides a specific modular Ph.D. training program that comprises scientific, technical and professional skills modules.

We expect an academic education with exceptional marks, a broad interest in international cooperation and commitment well beyond the field of your study. Good speaking and writing skills in English are essential; foreign students are also expected to develop their linguistic proficiency of German.
