PhD and post-doctoral fellowships inSurface Earth Geochemistry
ETH Zurich’s Earth Surface Geochemistry group is seeking to recruit scientists for two 3-year PhD positions and at least one post-doctoral research post. The projects will use the stable isotope geochemistry of the transition metals (iron, zinc, nickel molybdenum), combined with geochemical modeling, to understand the global biogeochemical cycles of these elements and what they tell us about key processes on the modern and past Earth. On the modern Earth, our focus is ocean chemistry, including the role of the transition metals as nutrients and as drivers of the biological pump. On the past Earth, the projects will use records of ocean chemistry and isotope geochemistry of these metals preserved in chemical sediments to track the couple evolution of the biosphere and the abiotic Earth.
An essential requirement for selection for the PhD projects is a top-quality MSc or equivalent 4–5 year degree in Earth or marine science and a good university background in quantitative science (maths, physics, chemistry). For the post-doctoral position(s) a PhD in geochemistry is essential. Enthusiasm for laboratory work is advantageous for all projects. We also expect you to aspire to use quantitative modeling approaches as part of your research project. All projects will involve field work on scientific cruises to sample the modern ocean or to sample the sediments that constitute the geological record of the past oceans.
