Following the recent events on the Balkan route leading to the cascading border closing and to a deteriorating situation in Northern Greece, and especially around Idomeni, more than 35 000 refugees are currently stranded in Greece, on third of them living in the North.
Idomeni and several other places including the ECHO gas station on the motorway at the Greek-Macedonian boarder served as a transit site in the last 6 months for refugees heading towards the Balkan route to reach the EU territory. According to UNHCR, between 10,000-14,000 (of which 40% are children and 22% women) refugees people are stranded at the border in Idomeni, while the temporary shelter capacity (2,400) remains highly insufficient and needs remain dire.
