3 Postdoctoral Positions in EU Law/Governance, Hertie School of Governance, Germany (2017)

For the LEVIATHAN project, the Hertie School of Governance is looking to hire three post-doctoral researchers (70%) Post-Doctoral Researchers in EU Law/Governance (m/f)

The contract duration is 12 months with the possibility of extension to a maximum contract duration of 42 months. Remuneration will be in line with the relevant collective labour agreement regarding wages (§ 14 TV-L Berlin). The envisaged start date is August 1 2017.

The 3 Post-Doctoral Researchers will work as part of the LEVIATHAN project: a large 4-year research project, funded by the European Research Council (ERC Starting Grant). Prof. Mark Dawson (https://www.hertie-school.org/dawson/) is the Principle Investigator for this project, which will be based at the Hertie School of Governance in the centre of Berlin.

LEVIATHAN’s aim is to explore the nature of accountability in ‘post-crisis’ EU economic governance. While the Euro Crisis has had a transformative effect on the functional ambitions of the EU, it has also transformed the ways in which citizens can hold the EU institutions accountable. In the area of economic governance in particular, the post-crisis EU has created a significant new body of fiscal rules, managed largely by executive institutions. The nature of these rules, and the institutions entrusted to manage them, challenges our existing scientific understanding of accountability, creating considerable confusion among citizens as how economic decision-making in an EU context can be properly scrutinized.

LEVIATHAN is devoted to addressing EU economic governance's 'post-crisis' accountability challenge. It is designed to provide the first comprehensive and multi-disciplinary attempt to consider how EU decisions in the economic field can be challenged, either by political institutions or by individuals seeking judicial review. In doing so, it will combine legal analysis of decisions of national and EU Courts in economic governance with qualitative research on the political and functional constraints within which institutions reviewing economic decisions operate. The project will deploy case studies in important fields of economic policy - from banking regulation to budgetary coordination - to map emerging accountability relationships, building recommendations on how to approach accountability in the EU in the future.

Your profile:
- A PhD in law (i.e. international, comparative or EU law) or the social sciences (i.e. political science, political economy, or international relations)
- A demonstrated interest in engaging in independent research on EU governance, particularly on questions relating to accountability and/or economic governance
- Ability to work on large research projects and produce related scientific publications
- Ability to work as part of a inter-disciplinary research team
- Fluency in written and spoken English
- Ability to provide some organizational and administrative support, in collaboration with other team members, to the research activities of the LEVIATHAN project
